Fingernails and puppy dog tails

Will one of you all-knowing moms PLEASE tell me the secret to giving baby manicures and pedicures?

I have great nails. They're thick, they grow really fast, and I have deep nail beds. Every time I've ever gone to get a manicure, my nail technician has told me all of this in broken English. I believe The Boog inherited her mommy's great nails (Woohoo! She has something of mine!!). Wanna know how I can tell?

I cut her nails once a week (she fights it with every ounce of her being - thus the call for help above), and before the week is over, her nails look like she's had a french manicure...you know, with the white tips and everything.

Today is Wednesday, right? With the chaos of my new single-mom-dom, the days are running together. But I digress. I cut The Boog's nails on Sunday. And last night, as I was rocking her to sleep, she reached up with her soft, chubby hand and gently caressed her mommy's cheek. At least that's what I thought she was going to do when I saw her hand floating innocently towards my face.

What actually happened: she smacked me on the cheek, then made her way to my mouth, where she proceeded to grab a fist full of my lip and squish it like a grape. As I tried not to scream and cry out in agony, I reached up to feel and make sure that my lip was in fact still attached to my face. It was, but when I looked at my hand, it was covered in blood! Yes - I'm being overly-dramatically and it was just a tiny speck of blood, but SHE DREW BLOOD. I then looked at her hands fully expecting to see shards of my lip flesh dangling from her fingertips, and the manicure I fought so hard to give her on Sunday was gone - she had white tips again already!

So, if I am going to have to trim her nails more than once a week, I have to come up with a new system. Help me!

I always filed my sons nails...it was so much easier and he didn't freak out about it. My daughter bites her nails and has since birth so she's never been an issue. His though? He's 9 now and we call his nails talons...it's just horrible...I feel for ya with the fast growing nails!

Oh, my...I totally feel your pain. My son rakes his eagle talons down my face on a regular basis...then jams them in my mouth and pokes me in the eye...
So far, my only strategy is to clip them while he's entranced by Elmo.

We learned our baby-nail-cutting trick from the vet. You know how when Daisy gets a shot in her booty, there's a technician at the other end feeding her treats to distract her?
Exactly.
Brian feeds puffs or some other yummy treat she loves while you cut nails. She might figure it out at some point, so that's when you change out the treat.
I've also been known to cut baby fingernails while said baby is sleeping. :)
